If so can you tell me if from the throwing position you can see the red light shining or it it shielded?

Yes - I have one and they are great. You cant see the light in front of you, just the line on the floor.

I've got one too - great bit of kit.
The light is shielded, but i could see that it might be visible depending on how/where you fix it.
